Stewart MacFarlane first entered the South Australian School of Art at the age of 16, and later studied in New York at the School of Visual Arts and the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. His pop inspired paintings depict dark and often disturbing unfinished narratives. He has exhibited extensively in Australia, Europe and the United States. His work is held by collections including The National Gallery of Australia; the National Gallery of Victoria; the Art Gallery of Western Australia; and internationally in the United States. This exhibition highlights his gouache paintings. These are the initial plein air studies that often become the basis for larger works. Now residing in Maslin Beach, MacFarlane depicts his new surroundings as well as featuring gouaches dating back to 1976 and periods in between then and now.
