Aldinga Township Streetscape Upgrade

Project status: construction
Consultation: closed
Location: Old Coach Road and Port Road, Aldinga

We have recently appointed Outside Ideas to construct the Aldinga Township Streetscape upgrade.  On-ground works are scheduled to commence in early July 2017 and be completed by early 2018.

Council has been working to improve streetscape and associated infrastructure in Aldinga Township for a number of years.  This work has been guided by a concept design approved by Council in November 2012.  Following a number of years of new and improved service infrastructure (sewer, powerline undergrounding and stormwater) the focus is now shifting to streetscape improvement along Old Coach Road including new and upgraded road pavements, new footpaths, street trees, understorey plantings, feature walls and seating.

Aldinga Township has been subject of considerable change in recent years.  The redevelopment by ‘On the Run’, the proposed ALDI neighbourhood shopping complex, residential subdivision on Old Coach Road, the planned upgrade of Main South Road and the heightened level of activity within the township resulting from the improved retailing offerings necessitated some adjustments to the 2012 streetscape concept design.  Key changes include incorporation of a ‘shared street’ environment for a defined section of Old Coach Road south of the roundabout and increased focus on improvements to Old Coach Road north of Carter Street. This revised concept was discussed with key stakeholders and members from the  previously established Community Reference Group in late 2016.

Two issues raised during this process have since been resolved. This included a pedestrian link to St Ann’s church and reinstatement of a pedestrian crossing from the Eco Village across Port Road. We have worked closely with Department of Planning Transport Infrastructure (DPTI) to ensure that a footpath will be provided running south from the planned Port Road/Main South Road roundabout along the eastern side of Main South Road to St Ann’s church as part of their works.  The pedestrian refuge on Port Road was installed as part of the recent Quinliven road works.

We are also continuing to work with Aldi, On The Run and the Department for Planning Transport and Infrastructure to ensure a coordinated approach to streetscape improvements to the eastern section of Port Road between Old Coach Road and Main South Road. These works have been triggered by adjacent developments and aim to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety and access.

On-ground works will require complex traffic management and both Council and Outside Ideas will work closely with affected stakeholders to minimise disruption. While there will be a concerted effort to reduce any impacts, some inconveniences can be expected.

Notice of One-way traffic restrictions along Old Coach Road north of the Port Road / Old Coach Road roundabout : 10 November to mid-December 2017

Streetscape works in the Aldinga township are progressing well and we are aiming to complete the bulk of the roadworks in the township before the end of December.

We will be commencing kerbing and road pavement works along Old Coach Road (north of the roundabout to the creek) on 10 of November aiming for completion by mid-December. One way traffic restrictions will apply during this time, with traffic only flowing in a northern direction. Detours will be in place and bus companies have been notified.

Business a ususal

The most important message we want to send to the community is that it’s business as usual in the township despite the traffic restrictions.

We ask that you please keep supporting the businesses in the area, despite the temporary inconvenience.

Detour signage will be provided for traffic around the road closure and current one-way.

This project along with others planned in the next few months along Old Coach Road will transform the area, and provide fantastic access and amenity for everyone.

We ask for everyone’s understanding and patience as we transform Aldinga Township to cater for the growing popularity of this great location.
