Our approach

Our approach to community engagement comprises a continuum of activities ranging from informing to consulting to more active participation with our communities.

There are many ways for us to connect with our communities to provide opportunities for community participation on a number of diverse issues. These include identifying relevant issues, making decisions about how to address them, and evaluating and sharing the results of our joint efforts.

Our engagement framework provides further information about our approach, including engagement methods and techniques..

Community engagement happens prior to elected member debate and decision-making in the Council chamber. Community feedback helps to inform our decision-making process.

The Local Government Act 1999 specifies the minimum that councils must undertake when engaging with their communities. Further information about our legislative requirements is outlined in the act and in our Public Consultation Procedure.

From the Mayor

Your elected members recognise that ongoing community participation is essential if we are to meet the needs of our people. We encourage community members to actively participate in community life and influence decisions that affect their lives. I am committed to a consistent approach to community engagement, which encourages an even greater representation of community views to inform local decision-making.

We regularly invite feedback from our communities to inform our planning. Our Project Status Board keeps you up to date about our engagement activities including Council decision-making and feedback to communities about your input.

On behalf of Council and myself, we pledge to work with our communities as we tackle the challenges ahead to ensure that the City of Onkaparinga remains the best place in South Australia to live, conduct business and enjoy.
