Waste and Recycling Strategic Management Plan

Project status: Review completed
Engagement: Closed

Location: City wide

Description

The draft Waste and Recycling Strategic Management Plan seeks to increase recycling and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. The draft plan focuses on:

  • the services council provides to our communities
  • council’s corporate operations, including the procurement of goods and services
  • maximising the economic benefits from the wider waste and recycling sectors within the city.

Having a say

Engagement on the draft Waste Recycling Strategic Management Plan closed on 20 January 2017.  The survey attracted a high level of response with almost 1200 surveys received. This comprised:

  • general public – 718 undertook the survey
  • resident E Panel - 465 undertook the survey.

In relation to our kerbside three bin systems the results indicate:

  • high levels of satisfaction with our kerbside waste and kerbside recycling services across both survey sources
  • mixed satisfaction with the four weekly kerbside green organics service from the E Panel survey (46% satisfied or very satisfied compared to 37% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied)
  • a high level of dissatisfaction with the four weekly kerbside green organics service from the general public survey (11% satisfied or very satisfied compared to 83% dissatisfied or very dissatisfied).

Next steps

The engagement outcomes and a revised plan were presented to the Strategic Directions Committee of Council at its meeting on 7 March 2017.

At the meeting the Committee approved the plan and requested a further report on options for possible changes to the kerbside green organics service. This subsequent report  was presented to the Committee at its meeting on 2 May 2017. At the meeting the Committee resolved that:

  • no changes be made to the kerbside green organics service at this time, and
  • that we increase education to our community in relation to the recycling requirements for garden, uneaten food scraps and compostable paper.
