Shimmer Photographic Biennale

The Shimmer Photographic Biennale is held every two years across the City of Onkaparinga to celebrate the art of photography and the culture of the camera.

This festival delivers a curated program of exhibitions, workshops, markets and artist talks inclusively supporting the creative talents of both emerging and established artists, as well as the local amateur photographic community. Shimmer began life through conversations between artists in Victoria and South Australia around the need for a photography festival in South Australia. The first festival was held in 2010 and has grown every year to the point where it is now considered an essential part of the state’s arts calendar.

This year, the fourth Shimmer Photographic Biennale runs from 2 September until 2 October 2016.

Launching on 2 September at the Arts Centre (with pre-launch at Sauerbier House) both in Port Noarlunga, this photographic celebration continues to deliver opportunities for established, emerging and the amateur hobbyist photographers to exhibit their work, expand their knowledge and provides a platform to discuss and demonstrate many aspects of personal and professional photography.

Alongside the aforementioned arts venues in Port Noarlunga, local McLaren Vale wineries play host to the exhibition program allowing the region to display its penchant for delivering not only high quality arts events but exceptional wine and food as well. The drivable program (downloadable map below) makes a day of photographic exploration an easy option.

Inaugural Shimmer timelapse competition

To lead us into the event the City of Onkaparinga is launching the inaugural Shimmer time lapse award . The winning work will receive a cash prize of $1000, with runner up to receive $500. The winning and shortlisted finalists will be announced at the launch of Shimmer on the evening of 2 September at The Arts Centre in Port Noarlunga  and then will be on display throughout the Shimmer Photographic Biennale at Leconfield Wines, McLaren Vale .

Entrants are asked to portray any aspect of the City of Onkaparinga’s area, be it natural man-made or imagined. The style could be illustrative, documentary, conceptual, or experimental, just as long as it utilises time-lapse capture as a visual device. Judges will be looking at how entrants use time to portray our city in an authentic manner. A shimmering element will never go astray!

Competition closes 16 August 2016.
