Walking groups

In conjunction with the Heart Foundation we continue to promote walking to encourage active lifestyles in the region for health and wellbeing benefits. Walking has a number of benefits for mind and body, such as reduced stress, enhanced mood, increased heart and lung fitness and a number of social benefits.

The Heart Foundation Walking Program is a free community initiative that uses local volunteer walk organisers to lead small groups of people on walks in their local area. Walking groups can vary from mums with prams, walkers walking with the four-legged friend or just neighbours getting together for a chat. Walks are scheduled on regular basis and are conducted in a fun, supportive and social atmosphere. Walk organisers are provided with training and resources including merchandise and CPR training.

With support from council, community members are encouraged to develop their own local walking group. All walkers receive incentives and awards from the Heart Foundation upon reaching significant milestones.
