Aboriginal Employment Program

Council (in a partnership with Maxima Group Training) provide local placements each year in Aboriginal school-based apprenticeships (usual 12–18 months duration).

These are structured training programs for senior school students (years 11 and 12) that combine part-time paid work at council with accredited training while completing study at school counting towards their SACE certificate.

Local Aboriginal students undertake placements in career areas like libraries and customer service at Noarlunga Centre, horticulture or civil and automotive at Seaford Depot or community social work at various Onkaparinga Youth Centres.

The Aboriginal Employment Program has been in operation since 2005 and nearly all of the participants complete their council apprenticeship and high school certificate, with many moving straight to full-time employment or further study.
