Ramsay Place - A place for everyone

Current Status: Stage 2 October 2017 – February 2018
Location: Ramsay Place, Noarlunga Centre – located on the northern side of the Colonnades Shopping Centre

Description

The Ramsay Place – A Place for Everyone project involves an upgrade to a key community space to provide an inspiring place that is a coherent, flexible and functional central destination for all locals and visitors to the City of Onkaparinga.

Ramsay place is a significant, regional community space that is host to events ranging from Australia Day breakfasts to outdoor music, fitness and cinema events.

A Ramsay Place Master Plan was developed in consultation with the Ramsay Place Steering Group and finalised in December 2015.  It includes the development of a new nature play space, improvements to the central lawn to better cater for events and activities, a new plaza and performance space, park furniture and landscaping.

Stage 1 of the masterplan was completed in October 2016, creating the nature play great garden including a rain garden, new hill slides, balancing ropes, climbing logs and song gongs.

Stage 2 is now currently under construction with several areas expected to be completed by mid December, prior to the scheduled Christmas events. Some works and final planting will continue in February 2018.

The stage 2 works will revitalise the area between the great garden nature play area and Colonnades shopping centre. The improvements include:

  • New picnic tables and refurbished seating will improve the amenity around the central lawn area. A new mosaic representation of the Onkaparinga river will be installed on the low wall at the change of levels within the lawn area. Improved access to the lawn area and softfall sculpture around the tree will enhance this area.

  • Between the central lawn area and the Hopgood Theatre a new stage and steps will create a new performance space to better support Ramsay Place as a vibrant hub for the community’s enjoyment.

  • Between Hopgood Theatre and the Colonnades food court entrance some of the old planter beds will be removed to improve access and movement. An additional nature play area will be included within the landscaped triangle near Gloria Jeans coffee shop. For younger children some play items will be installed near the entrance to the foodcourt.

The finalised design has something for all ages, with space for adults to socialise, play infrastructure to help children explore the sights, sounds and textures of their environment.

We’re aiming to set a high standard in urban spaces, better cater for a range of events and activities and meet changing community needs. Community consultation has been a priority throughout the planning process, with the master plan reflecting feedback from local business owners, service operators and residents.

The upgrade of Ramsay Place is supported by the Activate Ramsay Place program that is funded by Council and coordinated by the Ramsay Place Steering Group. This includes local business, community and government representatives who work together to develop a program of events and activities that encourages all members of the public to utilise and enjoy the area.
