Animal Management Plan

In accordance with the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995, all South Australian councils must prepare a plan relating to the management of dogs and cats within its area.

Our first Animal Management Plan was in place from 2006 until 2010. This Plan focussed on issues surrounding dog, cat and poultry ownership.

Our current Plan was adopted by Council on 26 June 2012 and approved by the Dog and Cat Management Board on 31 July 2012.

The Animal Management Plan 2011-16 has a strong focus on planning, engagement, education and compliance. Our vision for animal management, as contained within the Plan is:

‘Through planning, engaging and educating, cultivate a community which fosters animal welfare and promotes responsible pet ownership.’

Over the coming years we will implement a number of strategies to engage pet owners that will promote responsible practices for pet ownership, such as making an informed decision when selecting your pet, desexing, microchipping, training and identifying your pet.

We will also be establishing programs that promote the benefits of companion animals and recognise those pet owners in our community who make responsible decisions for their four-legged friends.
