Possums

Possums are a protected species and are territorial in nature.

Residents must obtain a possum permit from the Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR) before trapping possums. It is illegal to handle or interfere with any native animal, including possums, without a permit. Possum permits can only be obtained from DEH. Permit application forms can be obtained from the DEH website.

Once you have a permit:

  • Possum cages are available for hire. Please refer to our Fees & Charges for costs involved.
  • Residents are required to sign a hire agreement.

Once you have captured the possum, it must be released in the yard of which it was caught. It is an offence to relocate a possum.
