NRM Education

NRM Education can support your school’s sustainability journey.

The City of Onkaparinga hosts the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board, southern education team. The team works with about 50 schools and early learning centres (ELCs) within the Onkaparinga region, as well as schools and ELCs in five other council areas.

The NRM Education team works with school/pre-school communities to include sustainability into their learning and management practices. Students, staff and parents are provided with resources and support to take informed action in relation to sustainability. This helps them to develop the knowledge, skills, values and behaviours for leading sustainable lifestyles linked to learning in the Australian Curriculum.

Activities include developing environmental policies, sustainability visioning and hands-on learning such as building frog ponds, vegetable beds and butterfly gardens, managing food waste with worm farms and compost bins, investigating water and energy savings, or investigating wildlife in the school/preschool yard and beyond.

This important program is helping students to create dialogue with their parents and the wider school community on the importance of biodiversity associated with creek systems. Through monitoring activities schools are collecting a range of data that the Nature Conservation Team can use to help improve catchment health.
