Green Buildings Initiative

The Green Buildings Initiative is an ongoing program to ‘green’ Council buildings. The program will reduce energy and water use, waste and greenhouse gas emissions from all 360 council owned buildings over time and we have set a series of targets to help us monitor our progress.  The initiative is a strategic overlay to our buildings asset management processes and an integral part of our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.

Over the last few years a number of initiatives have been implemented, including installing solar PV systems at over 20 council owned sites and optimising air conditioner use (such as ensuring systems are switched off at night and on weekends)

In addition to the building upgrades, we are assisting our leaseholders to actively minimise energy and water consumption through their day to day activities.

Green Hubs

We have created Green Hubs in the north and south of the City to demonstrate ways to reduce energy and water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Why not take the opportunity to see the changes we’ve made, you never know, it might spark an idea for some easy changes that can be made at home to save you money and reduce your impact on the environment.

What's next?

We are currently reviewing energy use at our large buildings and identifying opportunities for new solar generation systems. We are also continuing to reduce power consumption by replacing inefficient air conditioning and upgrading lighting to efficient LED panels.
