Green Buildings Initiative

The Green Buildings Initiative is an ongoing program to ‘green’ Council buildings. The program will reduce energy and water use, waste and greenhouse gas emissions from all 360 council owned buildings over time and we have set a series of targets to help us monitor our progress.  The initiative is a strategic overlay to our buildings asset management processes and an integral part of our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.

More than 1,200 solar panels will soon be installed at three of our highest energy-consuming sites, Noarlunga Civic Centre, our Field Operations Centre at Seaford Meadows and Woodcroft Community Centre, our northern Green Hub.  This is expected to save over $80,000 per year and reduce our emissions by a whopping 33 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Installation is planned to occur between June to September 2019 and we estimate that the project will pay for itself in just over five years.  By tripling the amount of solar currently installed on council-owned buildings, we’re clearly demonstrating our commitment to environmental sustainability and responding and adapting to climate change, with a number of Onkaparinga’s other sites being earmarked for future solar installations.

Green Hubs

We have created Green Hubs in the north and south of the City to demonstrate ways to reduce energy and water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Why not take the opportunity to see the changes we’ve made, you never know, it might spark an idea for some easy changes that can be made at home to save you money and reduce your impact on the environment.

What's next?

We are currently reviewing energy use at our large buildings and identifying opportunities for new solar generation systems. We are also continuing to reduce power consumption by replacing inefficient air conditioning and upgrading lighting to efficient LED panels.
