It's important that only the correct items go in the recycling bin. Our recent kerbside waste audit identified that approximately 13% of the average Onkaparinga household’s recycling bin contents is contamination.

When the wrong thing is put in the recycling bin, we call this 'contamination'. Too much contamination in bins can mean the whole truckload has to be dumped at landfill. Visit our Recycling or disposal guide to see which products can go in the recycling bin.

Recycling makes a real difference for the environment, our economy and society. Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future. It also saves on energy and is less expensive than using new materials.

You can help by:

  • keeping plastic bags and soft plastics out of your recycling bin (plastic bags can only be recycled at participating supermarkets).
  • placing all items in your recycling bin loosely
  • flattening plastic bottles and keeping their lids on
  • removing lids from glass bottles and jars
  • emptying liquids and food from bottles, jars and containers first
  • flattening boxes, cartons and plastic bottles to create extra space

Our Recycling Revolution program helps residents to Recycle More & Recycle Right.

The City of Onkaparinga takes recycling very seriously - it is important that only certain items go in the recycling bin. In fact, you may find your bin rejected from collection if there is contamination (the wrong stuff) in there.
