Plastics

The triangle with a number from 1 to 7 is a Resin Identification Code notifying manufacturers what type of plastic the item is made from - it is not related to whether or not you can put it in your kerbside recycling bin.

So can it go in the recycling bin?

We advise:

Ignore the Number and ask the following 2 questions:

  • Is it foam?
Yes – then place it in the waste to landfill bin.

  • Does it hold a 3 dimensional shape?
Yes – then it can go in the recycling bin.
    e.g. a biscuit tray

No - if your plastic is scrunchy like a plastic bag, it is considered a soft plastic and should go in the waste to landfill bin or the soft plastics recycling bin at Coles Supermarkets.
    e.g. a biscuit wrapper

The company that takes the contents of our recycling bins is a household packaging recycler, so not all rigid plastics go in the yellow lidded/recycling bin.

See below for more details and specific examples to know where to put your plastics.
