Recycling Revolution

Recycle more

We can now put a wider range of items in our recycling bins

The City of Onkaparinga is taking recycling to the next stage as we commence a new contract with recyclables processor SKM Recycling. This change will allow exciting new options when it comes to household recycling.

From 1 April 2014, a range of additional items are now accepted in recycling bins in Onkaparinga, including:

  • pots and pans
  • rigid household plastic items, such as laundry baskets, buckets and power tool cases
  • kitchenware
  • plastic toys
  • plastic cups
  • pot plant pots.

Recycle right

How you manage your recycling is just as important as what you recycle

We need to Recycle Right as contaminants in recycling and green organics bins can result in the entire contents of the collection truck going to landfill. Then all that effort you’ve put into separating your unwanted items goes to waste. Did you know that if we continue to dispose of waste at the current rate, our landfill will be full in just 11 years?

Find out more about what can go in the recycling bin.

If you feel one bin is not enough, additional bins are available (fees apply).

What can you do to help?

  • leave plastic lids on plastic bottles (including spray & pump bottles)
  • flatten plastic bottles before screwing the lids on loosely (this makes it easier for the optical sorting)
  • take lids off glass bottles, jars & aerosol cans and place items and lids in the recycling bin
  • flatten boxes (to make more space & to help the sorting process)
  •  clean out food, but no need to waste water washing out

Setting up a bin system in your home is a good way to ensure that you are separating items that go into the recycling and waste bins as well as putting aside food scraps for your compost bin or worm farm.
